F1 at COTA with Kids: Our Austin Home Race & 2026 Tips
Our Austin family shares F1 memories at Circuit of The Americas, racing with kids, and practical ticket, bag and schedule tips for the 2026 US Grand Prix.

Race weekend is almost here, and the countdown in our Austin house is officially on. The 2026 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix returns to Circuit of The Americas October 23–25, with the new Grand PrixView Thursday kicking everything off on October 22.
We live in Austin, so COTA is not a destination we fly in to visit. It is our home track. We see race weekend take over the city, watch the team colors appear everywhere and then head out to the circuit knowing we get to come home to our own beds afterward. That makes the whole weekend feel both enormous and deeply personal.
We've been F1 fans in this house for years. Like so many families, Drive to Survive first pulled us all the way in—and suddenly McLaren, Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris became part of the family vocabulary.
Watching from the couch is one thing. Hearing our home track come alive is something else entirely.
Why COTA Race Weekend Feels So Different
The cars are the headline, but the whole weekend is the experience. When you live here, the build starts before you ever reach the gates: Austin begins filling with fans, race talk slips into everyday conversations and suddenly our familiar track is hosting the center of the F1 world.
🏁 Day 1: Take It All In
The first day is about atmosphere: seeing a place we know transform, finding our rhythm around the circuit and hearing the track come alive during practice. We do not have to rush straight into “race mode.” There is time to get oriented before the main race.
⏱️ Day 2: The Stakes Start Rising
Saturday qualifying sets the starting grid for Sunday’s Formula 1 race. By day two, every session suddenly matters more.

This is the day you cannot fully prepare for. The crowd, the speed, the sound and the championship stakes all arrive at once. Even if your favorite driver does not win, race day has a way of becoming the part your family talks about long after you leave.
The Sunday We'll Never Forget at Our Home Track
One of our favorite hometown memories, from 2021, was spending race Sunday in the Sports Illustrated Club at COTA. It was truly unreal. We were McLaren and Mercedes people, cheering for our drivers, and neither of our favorites took the win. It did not matter.
That is what I love about seeing F1 in person: your driver gives you someone to follow, but the day becomes bigger than the result. You remember where you stood, how the track sounded and who was beside you when the lights went out.
F1 weekends can look impossibly glamorous online. Parts of them absolutely are. But the part that stays with me is much simpler—being there together, completely caught up in the same thing.
Why We Bring the Kids Into It
This is not just something the adults happen to watch. The kids know F1. When Hot Wheels gifted us a Formula 1 track, they did not need an introduction; they needed an opponent and a starting line.
That is when you know a family interest has really taken hold: it leaves the screen and becomes part of how the kids play. Drivers become characters, teams become colors, and the starting grid appears anywhere there is enough floor space.
Taking kids to a major race is not effortless, but having one in our own city makes it possible to turn a global sporting event into a family tradition. The cars are faster, the circuit is larger and the crowd is louder than any television can explain. They get to see that the thing they love at home exists in a huge, real world—right here in Austin.
What Austin Families Need to Know Before Heading to COTA
Do children need tickets? Children two and under enter F1 free; ages three and up need tickets. Buy a ticket for any child who needs their own reserved seat.
What bags can we bring? For major races, COTA limits bags to 12 × 12 × 20 inches, with inspected medical exceptions. Certain concert upgrades have a separate clear-bag policy. Check the rules for your ticket.
What about food and water? Plan to buy food inside. An empty, non-glass water bottle of 32 ounces or less is allowed per person. For dietary accommodations, contact COTA’s accessibility team before your visit.

COTA Is Bigger Than One Race
We attended the MotoGP weekend below as guests of MotoGP.
Part of why COTA means so much to us is that it is woven into our life in Austin. F1 may be the biggest weekend, but it is not the only time our home track comes alive. Our MotoGP weekends have their own rhythm—practice, qualifying and the sprint, then the Grand Prix—and they remind us every time how much of the experience happens before the main race even begins.
Whether it is F1 or MotoGP, the track invites you to care about the whole weekend: not only who wins, but how the grid forms, how the atmosphere changes and how your family finds its own race-day traditions.
So Yes, We're Counting Down
The United States Grand Prix is almost here. Soon our city will fill with team colors, the road to COTA will feel like the center of the universe and our family will be debating drivers before breakfast.
I do not know who will win this one. I do know that years from now, the standings will blur and the feeling will not. That is why having this race in our own backyard means so much to us.
The result lasts a season. Your home-race traditions become part of the family.
