Family Halloween Costume Ideas: Our Favorite Coordinated Themes
The Santucci family’s coordinated Halloween costumes, from The Flintstones and Peter Pan to Beauty and the Beast, with practical tips for babies, twins and kids.
"Family costumes started as something cute when they were babies, but over the years it slowly became one of those traditions I know they will remember."
That's the truth of it. What began as "aww, matching babies" turned into our family's favorite annual production — a full coordinated theme, a photo shoot, and a group chat debate that starts earlier every year. Here's every theme we've done, what worked, and what I'd tell any parent attempting their first family costume.
🪨 The Flintstones — The Perfect Starter
Dad as Fred, me as Wilma, and the twins as Pebbles and Bam-Bam. If you're doing family costumes with babies for the first time, start here. It's cute, it's comfortable, it's recognizable in every single photo, and "perfect for them at this age" is exactly right — babies in animal-print onesies basically dress themselves.
🏴☠️ Peter Pan — The Lake Shoot
One of my all-time favorite photos: Dad as Captain Hook holding our baby Tinker Bell, me as Wendy holding our baby Peter Pan, out by the lake at golden hour. Proof that the location is half the costume. Find good light and even a simple theme looks cinematic.
🐉 Mother of Dragons — The One That Chose Us
Pregnant me as Daenerys, Dad in a grey tunic, and the kids as red and blue dragons. Sometimes the costume chooses you — the timing was just right, and honestly the dragons were the easiest kid costumes we've ever done. Comfortable, warm for October, and they could actually run around in them.
🕯️ Beauty and the Beast — The Belle Obsession Year
Dad as Lumière, me as Mrs. Potts, and the kids as Belle, the Wardrobe, and the Beast — shot on our backyard deck. This one happened because one of our kids was in a deep Belle era, and we've learned: when a kid is obsessed, lean in. Their joy in the photos is the whole point.
🃏 Alice in Wonderland / Descendants — The Big Group Theme
Parents as the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts, kids as Alice, the White Queen, the Red Queen, and playing-card characters — inspired after we watched Descendants: Rise of Red. This is my pick for families with a wider age spread: Wonderland has a character for everyone, from babies to grandparents.
🧚 First Halloween Twins: Alice, Hook, Fairy & Goblin
Mom as Alice, Dad as Captain Hook, and the twin babies as a fairy and a little goblin. My note to postpartum moms: this theme was comfortable for me. You do not need a corset three months postpartum. A flowy Alice dress and a dad willing to wear the Hook hat will do just fine.
What We've Learned (So You Don't Have To)
2. Dress for your reality. Postpartum? Chasing toddlers? Pick the comfortable parent costume. Nobody regrets the flowy dress.
3. Let the obsessed kid choose. The Belle year is our favorite because she was living her dream.
4. Twins are a feature, not a bug. Built-in matching pairs: Pebbles & Bam-Bam, Tinker Bell & Peter Pan, two dragons.
5. Golden hour + a good location does more for the photos than an expensive costume.
